The 1999 film The Mummy is an American action-adventure horror film written and directed by Stephen Sommers and produced by James Jacks, Sean Daniel, and Jim Jacks. The film stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, and Kevin O'Connor. It is a remake of the 1932 film of the same name, and the first installment in the Mummy franchise.

The film follows Rick O'Connell (Fraser), an American adventurer who, while searching for the lost city of Hamunaptra, accidentally awakens the ancient Egyptian priest Imhotep (Vosloo), who seeks to resurrect his deceased lover Anck-su-namun (Weisz) with the help of the Book of the Dead.

The Mummy was released in the United States on May 18, 1999. It was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $415 million worldwide. The film was praised for its special effects, action sequences, and performances. It was followed by two sequels, The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
